Born and raised in Aberystwyth where I spent my teenage years living in the coastal village of Borth, we were fortunate to have one of the most beautiful Nature Reserve’s on our doorstep. Ynyslas translates from Welsh to English as ‘Blue Island’ and without doubt, the name does it justice.
Most people I know had their first experience of driving on the sand covered car parking area at YnysLas! Once you had perfected going into second gear and could use the break, you were deemed road worthy!
Ynyslas has breath taking views across the Dyfi Estuary and stunning stretches of golden beach. I remember running up and down the magnificent sand dunes and hiding in little coves. The last time I went my son and nephew were catapulting themselves down the dunes all in the name of fun! We had a picnic at the top of a dune and nothing could have been more perfect. The boys pretended to be ship wrecked pirates, and had a wonderful time trying to identify different species of animal poo!
Even though Ynyslas is not a swimming beach due to the strong water currents, there is so much to do and see. It is one of the most tranquil places I have ever been to, but be prepared for achy legs!
